About Vikku Vinayakram and Selvaganesh with Band Arka
Grammy Award-winning percussionist Vikku Vinayakram is truly an Indian treasure who began his career at thirteen years old. He joined Shakti in the early 1970s to play along with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain. Since then, he has recorded four studio albums and won the Grammy for “Best World Music Album” for his participating in Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum. He was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2012, which is the highest award to receive in the performing arts in India.
Arka — a fusion band, will take you on a musical sojourn beyond words. While these masters represent different musical styles and are very individualistic in terms of their playing techniques, together they create magic with their music and make an unforgettable experience. The band consists of kanjira “artiste” Selva Ganesh, kanjira player V. Swaminathan, bassist Miskho M’Ba, guitarist Santhosh Chandran, flautist Ravichandra Kulur, singer Karthik and drummer Gino Banks. In honor of performing at the HTGC, the performance will feature entertaining songs and traditional music.
V.Selvaganesh represents a new breed of percussionists emerging from India. The son of T H “Vikku” Vinayakram, Selvaganesh emerges as a disciple of tradition. He gave his first performance at the age of ten and has performed with all the top-leading musicians of the Carnatic tradition as well as the western world. Those he had accompanied include Smt. M S Subbalakshmi, Smt M.L.Vasanthakumari, Lalgudi Sri Jayaram, Mandolin U Srinivas, Ustad Zakir Hussein, Ustad Alla Rakha and Sri T H Vinayakram. The list also includes the legends from the world of jazz and the western world with Musicians such as Jonas Helborg, John McLaughlin, George Brooks and Pete Lockett.
