About Indian Classical Music: An Evening of Sarod, Tabla, and Classical Guitar

Eye on India is highlighting an evening of tradition and culture — The Bengali Association of Greater Chicago presents a musical evening with Abhisek Lahiri, Subrata Bhattacharya and Fareed Haque


Abhisek Lahiri

Abhisek Lahiri is one of the youngest top-notch sarod players of All India Radio & National Television– Kolkata. His sarod recitals blend three major gharanas (schools) of sarod playing: Shajahanpur, Senia Maihar & Senia Bangash gharanas. Abhisek’s two solo albums “Sparkling Sarod” and “Mood of Puriya Kalyan” received nominations in the Global Indian Music Awards (GiMA) of Mumbai in 2010 & 2013.
Abhisek has the honor of being the First Indian Musician along with his eminent father to perform in “Europe Parliament” in France and also in “Canada Culture Days” in Hamilton, Canada on invitation of The Malhar Group.Abhisek is an empanelled member artist of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. Abhisek took part in the “World Kinder Festival” in Holland & enthralled the audiences as a ‘Wonder Child Sarod Player’ in 1997. The Dutch Television network telecasts his recitals countrywide even now.


Subrata Bhattacharya

When inborn talent and devotion to music come together they must inevitably give birth to an artiste like Subrata Bhattacharya. A tabla player of note on the Indian classical music scenario, Subrata is amazingly talented and his accomplishments and achievements in the field of percussion music have earned him name and enviable fame. Subrata is one of the leading tabla players in India today. Few tabla players have enjoyed such instant recognition and acclaim among concert audiences. Subrata’s solo renderings reveal his knowledge of the art and his creativity at their best.
The next milestone of his creativity and innovation is “Naad — The Everlasting Sound”, a group he has formed to experiment with fusion music. It seems the next inevitable step in Subrata’s career as a mingling and merging of eastern, middle eastern and western styles of music is the trend among makers and lovers of music these days. He is been a part of the Chicago based Indo -Jazz band Flat Earth Ensemble since its inception.


Fareed Haque

Fareed Haque is a modern guitar virtuoso. Steeped in classical and jazz traditions, his unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. Fareed maintains his Chicago stage as a guitarist in the forefront and continues to create music that presents the epitome of Cultural Crossroads . Fareed has a lot to his credit in recording and expanding his virtuoso to include musicians from India, Iran, and other places, creating new albums and traveling, spreading the great tunes. Voted ‘Best World Guitarist’ by Guitar Player Magazine in 2009, His acclaimed 2009 release Flat Planet was twice #1 on the World Jazz Radio charts.
